“You son of a bitch! Why the fuck would you lie to me? Goddamnit Tay, I feel like I don’t even know you anymore!”
“It was a one time thing! Fucking A, Casey, you’re making this into such a big deal! We’re friends, and it just happened once!” He yelled back at me, his eyes shifting between the road and my face.
“It is a big deal, but that’s not even the point! The point is, I asked you and you LIED to my face!” I screamed.
He slammed on the breaks. My seatbelt caught me as my body was propelled forward from the sudden jolt. I rubbed my neck where the seatbelt had burned the skin from the movement.
“Get out.” Taylor said calmly.
“What? What the f—”
“I said fucking GET OUT of the car!” His face contorted with the words.
I hit the release button on the seatbelt and kicked the door of the truck with my boot, swinging it open.
“You’re such a fucker Tay!” I said, stepping out of the car, and stomping my muddy footprint into the rusty white paint on the door. I flipped him off.
The road was dark. We had taken the back roads that night. It was roughly paved with loose gravel. There was nothing around me for miles except overgrown fields of grass.
‘This is the middle of nowhere you bastard!” I screamed as the truck rolled away from me.
Sliding my cell phone out of my back pocket, I dialed a familiar number. “Kim!” I said relieved. “I’m so glad you picked up. Taylor’s such a fucking dick, and he threw me out of his truck.” I paused. “So basically I’m all alone on this shit dirt road, and its fucking freezing.”
Hearing her reply, I muttered a quick thank you and flipped the phone shut. I rubbed my hands along my arms, trying to warm myself up.
It was about ten minutes before Kim showed up in her beat up blue Nissan ultima. I smiled waving as the headlights assaulted my eyes. She slowed to a stop in front of me.
I opened the car door and gingerly stepped in. I sighed happily feeling the warmth from her car heater.
“I am so sorry.” I said apologetically. “He’s such an asshole!”
She gave a half smile back.
“Aww, Kimmy, I’m so sorry. I know you were sleeping.” I rubbed her arm. “I was just freaking out, and I knew I could count on you to come get me.”
She nodded. “Yeah, I know. Its just—this is getting old Case. You both know this relationship is totally unhealthy. I don’t even understand how you put up with half the shit he puts you through. “
I leaned back into the cushion of the seat. “I know. The thing is, I don’t even know why. I can see how destructive it is, but something inside just keeps me coming back to him. Its like, logically I know this needs to end, but I still love him. And how do you leave someone you love?”
“Its hard. But sometimes it’s for the best.”
I let her words linger in the air. We drove in silence the rest of the way home. Pulling up in front of my house, I leaned over and hugged her. I closed the car door quietly, and softly made my way to the side yard of my house.
I had been sneaking out since I was 13 and had perfected the art of getting in and out undetected. Using a planter as a stepstool, I propelled myself up into the opening of my window. Hoisting the rest of my body up, I slipped inside.
I slipped the boots off my feet and into the back of my closet. Stripping the rest of my clothing, I grabbed an old shirt of Taylor’s off my floor and slid it over my head. I could still smell him. It comforted me, as it always did.
